Imagine a gadget that tells you what time of day will be unlucky. No, it's not something out of a sci-fi movie; it's a watch that promises to tell that period of each day when you should expect some bad luck or "Rahu Kaal" to cast a shadow over you. The limited edition watches, only 150 pieces are available, are priced between one to two lakh and are based on the Indian Panchang calendar.

Chitra Subramaniam - Duella, the co-founder of BorgeauD SA, the Swiss manufacturer of the watch, says they expect a huge response in India and abroad since Rahu Kaal is popular, even among foreigners. "It's a seatbelt for your wrist," she said.

A section of the watch fills up with coloured water as soon as Rahu Kaal starts and clears when the 90-minute period ends. The watchmakers say people should refrain from making important decisions during that period. The watch was made after a series of calculations based on the Panchang and involved discussion with scientists, astrologers, doctors and even philosophers.

But will it have any takers? Some find the concept "fascinating" but others aren't keen to shell out over a lakh for the watch. MAMC student Abhilekh Srivastava says he was on board till he heard the price. "It's a cool concept, especially for those who believe in these things. But it's way too expensive… I'd rather buy the new Nano for the same price!"

Law student Samya Chatterjee said, "It's too expensive. Plus, it's like those daily horoscopes . I don't believe in those things." Pallavi Singh, a BPO employee, says, "Considering how hectic our schedules are, it's crazy to think of a 90 minute break every day. That's like a shortcut to getting fired."

The watch does have some supporters too. "It's one of the most innovative inventions," says engineer Prateek Verma whose first response to the news about the watch was, "I have got to get myself one of those."

Writer Priya Gupta says it'll be a "great feeling to know exactly when you have some bad luck heading your way." The watch is available in Bengaluru and Delhi.
