Discord reportedly working on Clubhouse-like feature ‘Stage Channels’

Clubhouse may just be the best social networking trend to have emerged from the pandemic and the app just celebrated its first anniversary, but the competition has already begun to catch up. Twitter is almost ready with its Spaces service, Facebook and its subdivision Instagram are both working on competitors, while Telegram rolled out a Voice Chat feature for groups in December.

A new report now suggests that popular gaming voice chat application Discord could be working on a similar audio rooms feature which the company has reportedly dubbed “Stage Channels”, according to XDA. The feature seems to be in beta testing right now, but does not seem to be working, according to a user on Reddit.

Stage Channels, which are essentially a new format of Discord’s popular channels, work just like Clubhouse, which means that the host can speak, enabling a few others to join the discussion. Other users can also request permission to speak, which works just as you would expect it to if you’ve used Clubhouse on your iPhone or iPad.

However, if you were planning to use the Stage Channels feature any time soon, you may have to wait for a while as the feature itself doesn’t seem to be fully functional. The report notes that the feature is probably still being worked on, which doesn’t come as much of a surprise given that Facebook, Twitter, Telegram and several other platforms are all working on competing services as well.

If users want to be able to access the Stage Channels before other Discord users, they can head over to Discord’s official site and download the company’s Public Test Builds in order to receive an early version of the feature. Keep in mind that you still won’t be able to use it until the underlying code is all in place - and until Discord turns on the feature officially, so you may still have to wait a while. Maybe it’s better to check out Telegram’s Voice Chats feature in the meanwhile.
