Revealed! 5 reasons why teachers are unhappy with online education

A huge number of teachers don't like the online mode of teaching. This is so despite the fact that it was the only viable solution for students when the Covid-19 first hit India. At that time, fear drove every person's and every government's actions. Among the biggest decisions was to protect the children by closing all schools and other educational institutions. However, to ensure that some kind of continuity regarding studies was maintained, online education was recommended. Exams too shifted to the online mode. Now, a survey has revealed what teachers really think about online education.

According to a survey, some 43 per cent of teachers said they were not satisfied with online teaching during the pandemic. Not just that, there was more. In fact as many as 9 per cent of them said they were completely dissatisfied with the online education, PTI reported.

This was revealed by an online survey published in the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights' (DCPCR) first journal -- Children First: Journal on Children's Lives. A total of 220 school teachers participated.

Why teachers were not happy with online education

1. Absenteeism (14 per cent)

2. Children with special needs not being considered (21 per cent)

3. Low attention span of students (28 per cent)

4. Emotional issues expressed by the students (19 per cent)

5. No assessment or assignment completion by the students (10 per cent).

The survey also revealed that, for a successful transition to the online mode, a number of pre-requisites are necessary. "The pandemic shifting of those necessities still poses a major challenge to online learning," it said.

No face-to-face access to students has its own negative points for teachers. The teachers stressed that the involvement of parents became necessary in school education because only they have regular access to children.

Among the big personal challenges mentioned by teachers was keeping up with online teaching schedules and fulfilling their responsibilities at home at the same time.

Notably, students too participated in the survey. They said that they missed school activities, including meeting friends, interacting with people, celebrations, and friendships. Others said that they were overloaded with academic exercises.
