Warning people to be aware of such fake emails, the SBI added that customers should refrain from clicking on these. ABI added that the bank never sends such emails.

The bank also asked customers to report such fake emails at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. They also provided a link to their internet banking portal so as people are not misled. SBI alerted customers and asked them to think before they click.

While SBI’s Twitter warning might have been about a recent lot of fake emails that customers might have received, the steps advised are good measures to follow for all sorts of scam emails.

Whenever you receive a link from any banking authority in particular, make sure you check the URL carefully before you click on it. Fake and malicious URLs usually have typos and alphanumeric codes in them and on closer scrutiny will appear to be illegible. Make sure you do not click on such links.

Also, another relatively foolproof way of spotting fake emails is by looking at the email address from where the mail has been sent. These email addresses seem identical to verified and authorised email ids but if you look carefully you will spot spelling errors and typos. For example, SBI’s official email ID might be - sbi@gmail.com, the fake emails will probably come from an id like - sib@gmail.com.

At a glance, this is easy to mistake and that’s what does a lot of unsuspecting customers in.

Since your money is at stake here, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
