Earlier this year, Samsung launched the SmartThings Find ecosystem to enable tracking for Galaxy devices like smartphones and tablets, as well as wearables like Galaxy smartwatches and wireless earbuds. The company also launched its SmartTags tracker, which uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to help a user find any object it is attached to.

However, as one might imagine, the tracker device is something that could be misused by a nefarious person, who could track someone by placing a tracker on their person or their belongings. Samsung on Tuesday announced that it was mitigating this risk by allowing users to scan for any ‘unknown’ Galaxy SmartTags around them.

According to Samsung, the new ‘Unknown Tag Search’ feature, which is part of SmartThings Find, will allow users to perform a one-touch scan for any unknown Galaxy SmartTags around you, which you can then check to verify if they’ve been placed on your person or among your belongings. Samsung also adds that all SmartThings Find user data is encrypted and that data collected is anonymised to ensure data is only shared with the tracker’s owner.

If this newly announced feature sounds familiar, it is because Apple is also working on a similar feature for its rumoured upcoming AirTags that will similarly alert you if there are any unknown trackers that are ‘moving with you’. Such features can definitely come in handy to stop a stalker, family member or possessive partner from keeping tabs on you and your location.

The company is also adding another feature to its SmartThings Find platform, which allows users to talk to Bixby to find their Galaxy SmartTag trackers and the objects they are attached to. With hands-free access, a user can simply ask Bixby where their pet is -- if they have attached a SmartThings Find tag to its collar.
