JAXA said, “Our aim is to obtain actual data (ground truth data) regarding the quantity of water (H₂O) from in-situ observations of areas where water is anticipated to exist, based on the available past observational data.” Further, the quality of the water will be evaluated in terms of distribution, conditions, and form.

The mission objectives also include studying the evolution of lunar surface water to its current state and that will be done by studying the lunar environment. This mission will increase knowledge of how planetary bodies retain water.
