Aadhaar card address change can be done online too now! So many of us have this critical need to make this change in our Aadhaar card, but the thought of stepping out of home to visit an Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Enrolment/Update Centre is so unpleasant that it ensures this problem remains unsolved. However, UIDAI has some good news. There is no need to worry now as it has been made possible to carry out your Aadhaar card address change online on a smartphone via the Aadhaar card self-service. UIDAI has allowed cardholders to make changes to this field too and all you have to do is visit its website. We explain how to make an address change in your Aadhaar card online and how much it will cost.

Aadhaar card was introduced in 2010 when the first unique ID was assigned. Since then, the document has acquired immense importance as it has even been connected to government benefits such as LPG subsidies and Provident Fund, individual bank accounts, and lately, even for vaccination purposes. So, if there is some mistake in the Aadhaar card address, it becomes crucial to get it fixed quickly.

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) which is the governing body in charge of Aadhaar, recently announced that Aadhaar cardholders can now update their address that is linked to their 12-digit number. This new service is available at the UIDAI's self-service portal and can be accessed by visiting this link.

Aadhaar card address change process - Then

Previously, if users wanted to get their Aadhaar card address changed, they had to visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Enrolment/Update Centre. Clearly, a very time-consuming an unpleasant chore, not to mention potentially dangerous in times of Coronavirus pandemic.

Aadhaar card address change process - Now

Instead of visiting a nearby Aadhaar Seva Kendra or Enrolment/Update Centre, Aadhaar card holders can now visit the dedicated page for the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal to change their address. However, users will see a list of documents that can be submitted online as proof of residency. These must be uploaded in original scanned format, while users must also have their mobile number registered with Aadhaar so they can avail of this service.

How to change your Aadhaar card address online:

Step 1: Login to the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal by visiting this link, then click on Proceed to update Aadhaar.

Step 2: You can now enter your 12 Aadhaar digit number and fill in the necessary human checks to get an OTP.

Step 3: After entering the OTP, you can view all your Aadhaar details on the screen. Now edit the fields that you want to change – such as name, date of birth, gender, address and language.

Step 4: You will need to upload a scanned original document that can verify the new change of details and then click the Submit button.

According to UIDAI, users who submit an update request via the Aadhaar Self Service Update Portal will be charged 50 per update request that is made through the online portal. However, if there is more than one field that needs to be updated, users should apply to change both at the same time, as UIDAI has stated that updating more than one field at a time is considered as one update only.

Other Aadhaar card updates that can be done online

Till now, users who wanted to update their name, date of birth, gender and language could do so via the UIDAI website. However, if a user wants to set or edit his Head of Family/Guardian details or perform a biometric update, a visit is still required to an Aadhaar centre to make the change.
