From Seeta aur Geeta, Ram aur Shyam to Judwaa, Bollywood over the years has churned out a number of movies based around twins. We still get amused to see the actor in a double role, especially when the two characters share the screen at the same time. Prior to the digital era, people relied on tedious photography tricks that involved using a duplicator, device that enabled one section of a negative to be exposed while keeping the other section unexposed.

In the era of smartphones, getting a double role-like effect is not really that cumbersome. Also, you don't need to be a pro at photography, just keep your hand stable and you can actually pull off some cool still shots. While you can easily create such effects with software like Photoshop, there are a number of free apps on the Google Play store that let you capture a double role of yourself or your friend.

Before we hold forth, do remember these apps won't give you a movie-level quality, but nonetheless they're cool enough to share on social networking platforms.

Clone Yourself - Split Pic

Developed by Lyrebird Studio, the Clone Yourself - Split Pic is available for Android version 4.0 and up. The free version allows you to clone up to two images. After having installed the application on your phone, tap on "start." For best results, hold your camera stable and keep one position while taking multiple photos. Once you have clicked two photos, go to the next step, and outline the subject you want to clone. The app then processes the image and delivers the effect.

The app is fairly simple to use, though in-app purchases are bit annoying. If you have a stable hand or are using a tripod for the smartphone, you can really pull off a good shot. Here's a photo taken from the app.

Split Pic 2.0 - Clone Yourself

The application allows you to divide your camera into several sections, which further allows you to create some fascinating effects. You can choose to stitch the multiple images, create a special effect or even have a sharp contrast between photos, similar to a collage effect. It also has a built-in timer that allows you to clone yourself. We tried out this app and here's how the effect looks like.

Clone Camera

Available for Android 4.0 and above, Clone Camera lets you combine multiple shots into one. Unlike the Clone Yourself - Split Pic application, the Clone Camera app isn't as smooth as you'd like it to be. Moreover, there are too many ads. If you are able to look past these elements, you can get a decent effect. Ensure you have a plain background and stable hands or preferably use a tripod to get the effect right.
