No tweeting for Google

Well, the entire fairy tale about Google going on to buy Twitter is not one of them. The entire idea actually seems a part of some misconstrued fairy tale of Google becoming emperor of the Internet. Here are the facts, straight and true, as to why Twitter is not in talks to be purchased by Google.

Remember when Epic's Cliffy B jokingly stated that, "It's a funny thing about rumours on the Internet. Sometimes they turn out to be true"? Well, the entire fairy tale about Google going on to buy Twitter is not one of them. The entire idea actually seems a part of some misconstrued fairy tale of Google becoming emperor of the Internet. Here are the facts, straight and true, as to why Twitter is not in talks to be purchased by Google.

1. "There is no question Twitter is being watched closely by Google," states Kara Swisher of All Things Digital but after hearing from a source close to Twitter, she adds, "There was a discussion with [Google executive Marissa Mayer's] group about real-time search and about product stuff. It was a couple of weeks ago. It was very preliminary… and that was that." Another source stated, "Seriously, no negotiations, no deal, nada."

2. On Twitter's very own blog was the following post: "My inbox is flooded this morning with requests for a response to the latest Internet speculation about where Twitter is headed. It should come as no surprise that Twitter engages in discussions with other companies regularly and on a variety of subjects. Our goal is to build a profitable, independent company and we're just getting started. We've got just over thirty employees now and we're working out of a loft in San Francisco's SoMA neighborhood. Any company trying to become independent doesn't suddenly do a 360-degree spin and merge with another.

3. Special thanks to a colleague for pointing this out today: "Something like Skype sells for 4 billion dollars. Twitter is well worth much more than the measly 250 million dollars the rumours are quoting."

If Google really does buy Twitter, it'll be a shock of catastrophic proportions. However, all we've heard thus far are rumours and nothing more.
