As well as announcing rising profits, in its latest earnings call Facebook revealed that it's still attracting new users and that membership has jumped another 13% year on year to a remarkable 1.39 billion monthly users.

According to the United Nations' and the United States Census Bureau's calculations, there are currently 7 billion people on the planet. That means that 20% of the people on Earth are also active Facebook users.

However, not everyone in the world has internet access. The most recent data puts the number of people around the globe with a web connection at just over 3 billion meaning that in reality, if a person has web access, there's also a 50/50 chance that they also have a Facebook page.

But as well as highlighting that the social network is almost as popular as the internet itself, Facebook's latest figures also offer insight into how consumer behavior is changing thanks to the continued proliferation of mobile devices.

Of its 1.39 billion active monthly users, 1.19 billion are accessing the network via an app. And when it comes to active daily users, 745 million of the 890 million total are daily mobile users.

As for consumers that have rejected the desktop altogether, Facebook says that it currently has 526 million active monthly users who are mobile only -- i.e., they never log in via the desktop -- and that this figure has jumped from 456 million in the previous quarter. In fact, over the past 15 months (five business quarters) Facebook has seen the number of mobile-only users jump by roughly 50 million each quarter; back in the fourth quarter of 2013 only 296 million users were mobile only.
