OLED displays are all the rage these days in laptops, with Asus, Dell and Lenovo offering their top models with OLED displays. It is only Apple who has been faithful to the LCD display for its entire Mac range. The MacBook Pro models flaunt their miniLED display but that too is essentially LCD tech. It now seems that Apple wants to embrace OLED panels for its Mac and iPad range, as suggested by the latest report.

DSCC’s Ross Young has recently said in a note (via Macrumors) to his subscribers that Apple is planning to introduce high refresh rate OLED displays on the 13-inch MacBook Air, 11-inch iPad Pro, and 12.9-inch iPad Pro in 2024. This is big for the MacBook Air, which is currently the entry level model in the Mac laptops lineup. Young doesn’t say anything about the OLED panel coming to MacBook Pro models.

Young doesn’t share much about the display, other than the fact that these devices will use a two-stack OLED display. A two-stack OLED will have two layers of RGB pixels that allow for higher brightness and more efficient power consumption. OLED panels also allow for better colour reproduction.

Not sure which
laptop to buy?

With a ProMotion OLED panel on the MacBook Air, Apple’s entry-level laptop can now go head-to-head with competition from the Windows universe. What remains to be seen is whether Apple gives the OLED treatment to 13-inch MacBook Pro, 14-inch MacBook Pro, and 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Earlier this year, Apple launched the MacBook Air with M2 as the replacement for the popular M1 powered MacBook Air. The new model came with a refresh design inspired by the 14-inch MacBook Pro. It gained the MagSafe port for charging, liberating two USB-C ports. Additionally, the MacBook Air M2 also got a bigger 13.3-inch IPS LCD display but had to settle for a display notch for holding the 1080p front camera. The new M2 chip promises a slight boost in performance, but battery life remains the same at up to 18 hours. Apple also continues to sell the M1 MacBook Air as its entry-level laptop.
