iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus would be similar to the iPhone 13 series in one major way – the choice of the chipset. Every year, Apple launches its latest iPhones with the newest Apple Silicon chip, and this has been a ritual for years. Now, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, which will be the two vanilla models this year, are likely to recycle the chipset from the iPhone 13 series this year. This may be a big cost cutting measure from Apple in over a decade while launching a new iPhone.

Based on a report from The Wall Street Journal, it is said that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus will be based on an “enhanced version” of the A15 Bionic chipset. While no further information has been shared, it is likely that Apple could be using the A15 Bionic chipset from the iPhone 13 Pro, which already uses this enhanced version of the A15 chip. The A15 on the iPhone 13 Pro has a 5-core GPU instead of the usual quad-core GPU on the standard iPhone 13. Hence, graphics performance is said to improve by almost 25 percent.

iPhone 14 to use enhanced iPhone 13 chip?

Note that Apple is yet to confirm anything with regards to this and hence, you should take it with a pinch of salt. However, with so many tipsters confirming the same, there seems a higher chance of this happening.

The Apple A15 Bionic chipset might be a year old by now but it is in no way slow. The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are able to do everything that Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 smartphones from 2022 can do, and just as nice, if not better. Hence, Apple could reuse the same chip on its 2022 iPhones and do its magic with optimisation. Technically, the standard iPhone 15 may be slower on paper than the iPhone 15 Pro but in reality, things couldn’t be much different.

The A16 Bionic, on the other hand, is said to be an upgraded version of the A15 Bionic, based on the 5nm process, and could be tuned to perform better with graphically intensive tasks. Plus, Apple would need to optimise it for the new 48MP camera sensor as well as the new Always On Display additions expected this year.
