Apple does it differently. After the invention of the display notch in 2017 with the iPhone X, Apple stuck with it for four years before planning to ditch it – all this while Android rivals have been busy shrinking the display notch to a small camera cutout. In 2019, some brands even moved to pop-up camera arrangements to remove any distraction within the display area. However, Apple stuck with the notch all this while and in 2022, it moved to display cutouts but in a slightly unusual way.

While Android brands have been busy investing in the under display technology, Apple figures out a way to hide the cutouts with the Dynamic Island – an interesting software implementation that brings around a lot of functionality to the cutout. Apple is using animations and icons to manage multitasking as well as basic tasks, all the while the cutouts are hidden. And that is what the next big thing is for Android manufacturers.

Dynamic Island is the next big thing for Android

However, Apple is the trendsetter in this regard and Android brands will look into copying this over the next few years. Why? Remember the bold flat sided design of the iPhone 12? Look at how many Android phones wear that same look today! The same goes for the display notch – it was the trend in 2018 and 2019 for affordable Android phones.

With Android phones, most models go for the small and single camera cutout. What remains to be seen is how this Dynamic Island thing is implemented for these single camera cutout layouts. Maybe we get to see the return of IR sensor based facial recognition systems on high end phones, or the same for dual front camera phones. Android doesn’t support this by default and it could take Android 14 to bring this natively.

On the other hand, the concept of Dynamic Island on Android phones may not ever come true. With brands like Samsung and Xiaomi investing highly in under-display camera tech, we could see phones just stay the same, with the hardware disappearing from the front.

Whatever happens, the Dynamic Island is an interesting concept for the iPhone and it works in a great way to enable multitasking, despite not having a multitask taskbar. We would like to see the iPhone in general adopting this feature for all the models.
