The iPhone 14 Pro has long been rumoured to ditch the infamous display notch after a long run since 2017’s iPhone X. In its place, the iPhone 14 Pro is said to go for a dual cutout layout for holding the front camera and a TrueDepth camera system. A late leak now says that while the cutouts are physically different, Apple will show them as a single wide pill cutout using some software magic. Now, noted Apple tipster Mark Gurman affirms the same in his latest post on Twitter.

In a new retweet, Gurman says that Apple would be merging the two cutouts via software trickery. Hence, while using the iPhone 14 Pro, the space between the two cutouts will be merged by blackening out the space. It is even said that Apple will move the privacy indicators from the corner of the display to the center, thereby liberating more space in the corners.

iPhone 14 Pro to have one wide cutout

The pill shaped cutout has been previously used by Huawei and Samsung on their older flagship phones. The Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus had a wide pill shaped cutout for its two front cameras. The iPhone 14 Pro, however, will have a single front camera and the Face ID sensors integrated into the small space.

That said, this won’t be the only change with the iPhone 14 Pro’s display. The iPhone 14 Pro series is also said to get a new LTPO 2.0 OLED panel, which allows the screen refresh rate to go as low as 1Hz. This will allow Apple to integrate a new Always On Display feature for the first time. Rumours suggest that the AOD feature on the iPhone will show a minimal version of the lockscreen widgets, unlike the AOD functions you see on most Android phones.

However, note that the display innovations from Apple will only come on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max. The standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are said to have the same old OLED display as the iPhone 13, having the same old shorter display notch. There is a high chance of these models retaining the 60Hz refresh rate, although some suggest the possibility of a 90Hz refresh rate.

Did you know?

iPhones for a long time haven’t had high refresh rate displays. It was 2021’s iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max that introduced the idea of variable high refresh rate displays. The iPhone 13 Pro series can vary its refresh rate between 10Hz and 120Hz, thereby making them the smoothest displays on an iPhone we have ever seen.
