The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion has been around for a while now and it is a shame nobody talks about it – not even Motorola. Launched in the shadows of the flagship Edge 30 Ultra back in September 2022, the Edge 30 Fusion does so many things better in the sub-Rs. 45000 category. And now, Motorola has spiced it up as 2023 begins. Consider it a special edition but with a hint of fashion – the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta.

Launched at a price of Rs. 39999, this is right now the most desirable smartphone you can buy in this price range. In my humble opinion, it even beats the Nothing Phone (1) with its design – see, LED lights and transparency not necessary for the looks. Beyond that new shade of colour, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta is identical to the standard model. Since we could not test the vanilla version back then, here is our full review of the Edge 30 Fusion after an extensive usage of over 10 days.

Design and Build

Motorola spares no attention when it concerns its flagship grade phones. The Edge 30 Fusion belongs to the flagship lineup and it is much better built than the Edge 30 Pro from last year. It feels compact with its 6.5-inch curved edge display and Motorola has somehow managed to mask the bulk well. This being the Viva Magenta edition, you get to see a vegan leather back wearing the Pantone colour of the year 2023. I love the Magenta shade and I love Motorola’s choice to go with a leather back design. The metallic side frame also gets the Magenta treatment and so does the camera hump.

In a sea of phones that look like iPhone 12 clones, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta is different and, most importantly, beautiful. Hey Moto, could you do more phones in this spec?

Display

Premium phones of today have beautiful displays as standard and the same can be said for the Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta. We get a 6.5-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a refresh rate of up to 144Hz. In the vivid colour calibration, content looks bright and contrast-y, with good levels of sharpness. Outdoor legibility is good under the sunlight and the curved edges don’t hinder touch input. The optical in-display fingerprint scanner is quick and accurate. Best display under Rs. 40000? The answer is affirmative.

Performance

Being the “flagship killer” grade device from 2022, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta uses the Snapdragon 888+ chip – a chip used by late 2021 flagship phones. This chip is mighty powerful by all means and on the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta, I haven’t found anything that stresses this chipset. Be it the graphically intensive games or social media apps, the Snapdragon 888+ performs nicely. I observed no signs of heating after long hours of gaming but then, it is peak winter in New Delhi and phones love a cool ambient temperature.

Helping the Snapdragon 888+ is Motorola’s software. You are getting a Google Pixel-esque stock version of Android with certain Motorola additions. Moto’s custom gestures are present and so are the myriad of customisation options to keep users happy. More than these though, I was impressed with the superb optimisation – smooth animations, no hiccups; just plain sailing through everyday tasks. I wished Motorola launched the Viva Magenta edition with Android 13 but let me remind you that this is a 2022 phone and Motorola takes its own sweet time to release updates. Another thing worth mentioning is the lack of bloatware, except for the pre-installed Facebook app – a luxury compared to the bloaty mess that you see in iQOO, Realme and Xiaomi devices.

I feel Motorola could have done something to offer a premium audio experience. There is a set of stereo speakers that are decently loud but the audio quality is far from beefy – it is average at best. Motorola has released the 5G update on this handset but my Jio connection is yet to be eligible for testing 5G, hence I relied on the good old 4G LTE, which worked perfectly. Call quality was great and I faced no connectivity issues.

Cameras

One area where Motorola struggles! The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta has a 50MP + 13MP + 2MP triple camera setup at the back, out of which I found only the main and ultrawide to be useful. Motorola’s camera algorithms take daylight photos with washed out colours, and night photos are made to look bright but devoid of the colour saturation. The dynamic range is lacking here but the camera makes up for it with details and exposures. You will simply need to edit the photos and bump up the saturation for natural looking colours. The ultrawide camera is a notch below in terms of colours and lights but it functions well as a macro camera. The 32MP selfie camera is good in most situation but struggles with colours.

I wasn’t able to test the video recording performance properly here but you can record 8K at 30 fps, 4K at both 30 and 60 fps, and 1080p videos at both 30 and 60 fps. The camera struggles with exposure maintenance and dynamic range, something that happens much better on a similarly priced iPhone SE.

Battery

Motorola phones are well optimised for battery life and this one is no exception. Despite a 4400mAh capacity battery, I was easily able to use the phone for an entire day and have some left for overnight, despite doing some gaming and hours of social media browsing. Thankfully, the 68W fast charging can brim the battery to full in around 40 minutes. No wireless charging here though.

Conclusion

The Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta isn’t new but when you look at the overall package and what it costs, it turns out to be a brilliant smartphone. Rs. 40000 gets you a beautiful design and superb fit-and-finish, great performance, splendid battery life, very fast charging, a clean Android experience, and a nice display. The cameras have always been an achilles heel for Motorola devices and I hoped to see some work done on tuning it right. Also, launching it with Android 13 would be a nice idea in early 2023.

Nonetheless, the Motorola Edge 30 Fusion Viva Magenta is now our top recommendation at Rs. 40000 if you seek a great premium Android experience. Those seeking better cameras can look at the iPhone SE 3 and the iQOO 9.
