Google Meet is now free for everyone with a Gmail account

Google last month announced it is making its premium video conferencing app, Meet free for everyone. It has now completed rolling out the free version of Meet to all users globally. Google will also bring the Gmail integration for Meet soon.

Google already offers Hangouts to its Gmail users who are not G-Suite customers for whom Meet is exclusive. But owing to the increase in video conferring during this pandemic, Google made Meet free for all. Now anyone with a Gmail account can start using Meet by going to meet.google.com. At the same time, users can also download the Meet app for Android and iOS.

Google will also add Gmail integration for Meet as well in the coming weeks. This feature is already available for G Suite users where there’s essentially a shortcut for Meet on Gmail. Users can start a meeting and join a meeting straight from this shortcut.

Some of the advantages that come with using Meet include real-time captions, customisable layouts, low-light mode for better visibility and more. Users can also invite others directly from Google Calendar for video meetings.

Google has been quite flexible with Meet ever since the lockdown period started globally. It made its advanced features on Meet free for everyone in G Suite back in March. Ever since seen daily usage grow by 30x and 3 billion minutes of video meetings daily. Google Meet has also been adding around 3 million users every day.
