An Apple event is among the most looked-forward-to events in the world of technology annually. Live streams beam the latest announcements all the way from San Francisco, jokes and memes trend, and a war of words takes over social media as fans and detractors dissect every little detail. Here are five things that stood out this year:

$1,000 tablet: Apple unveiled a string of products, including a 'monster' iPad Pro. Memes about the massive 12.9inch screen surfaced online almost immediately. But what surprised everyone was the pricing. It starts at $799 for a 32GB Wi-Fi model, and sets users back by $1,000 if one gets the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard, which the company will retail for $99 and $169 respectively (prices only announced for the US market).

'Who needs a stylus?': In 2007, Steve Jobs famously mocked the idea of a stylus. 'Who needs a stylus?... Yuck! Nobody wants a stylus,' he said. In a move that brought home the point that the Jobs era is well and truly over, the company launched the Apple Pencil. An accessory for the iPad Pro, the pressure- and motion-sensing stylus built specifically for drawing and writing had Android users gloating online on how 'the mighty had fallen'.

RIP home button: Phones just got a 'right click' option, and it is called 3D Touch. The new feature on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, which we predict will soon become the norm across smartphones, relies on pressure to help you interact with the device. Depending on whether you opt for a soft or heavy touch, you could 'peek' (read preview) at certain actions or 'pop' content.

Microsoft at an Apple event: Microsoft did a demo for Office on the iPad Pro, and the internet exploded. Shocked fans took to social media, with comments like 'Hell freezes over' and 'So that just happened. @Microsoft at the #AppleEvent'. To make what felt like an awkward gathering weirder, an Adobe exec walked in to showcase its app for the tablet.

Siri for TV: Apple may believe that 'the future of TV is apps' and have launched the tvOS, but it was Siri's turn to shine. Playing a huge role in Apple TV, it has universal voice-search functionality across gaming, movies and TV programming. You can also bring up weather, sports scores and other info by just asking for it.
