Apple has explained why the AirPods Max case looks that weird

When Apple launched their first over-the-ear headphones, the AirPods Max earlier this month, there were a lot of points that got people talking. One of the main points was what the case of these ₹59,900-headphones looks like.

Apple is known for their usually out-of-the-box, never-seen-before kind of designs that are often quite different from their competition, so a headphones’ case that looks this unique was not surprising. Now, in an interview with a Japanese news site, Apple has explained its logic behind the AirPods Max’s case.

According to reports, Apple’s industrial designer Eugene Whang, Apple’s VP of product marketing Bob Borchers and Apple’s VP of industrial design Evans Hankey spoke about the new AirPods Max at length.

The three executives said that the primary reason behind the AirPods Max case design was storage efficiency. “Today, most headphones come with large, cumbersome cases, but we travel a lot, so we know how important it is to fit in a bag,” they said.

They went on to explain that the case is structured from one sheet that has been cut out and fastened at many places to make it three dimensional.

The case covers the ear cups and not the headband and the Apple executives explained that they felt it was not necessary to protect the headband because it was made to be strong in the first place.

Apple also added that the headband becomes a holder when the ear cups are folded and packed into the case making it easy to carry the headphones. The exposed band makes it easier to grasp it with your hand and take it out of a bag, Apple explained.
