Apple's first mixed-reality headset could cost $3,000

Apple is reportedly working on an augmented and virtual reality headset that is expected to launch in 2022. Bloomberg reported last month that Apple’s first headset will offer a 3D digital environment for gaming, watching videos and communicating. A new report by The Information adds more details to Apple’s AR/VR headset.

The report (via The Verge) is based on images of a late-stage prototype of Apple’s mixed-reality headset from late last year. The design is explained as “a sleek, curved visor attached to the face by a mesh material and swappable headbands.” Bloomberg had also mentioned Apple using a fabric exterior for its headset. The headband looks similar to the Apple Watch band, while the mesh fabric could be similar to the one used for the HomePod.

Apple’s mixed-reality headset is said to have more than a dozen cameras to track hand movements, and feature 8K displays. It will also be equipped with “advanced technology” for eye tracking, and LiDAR sensors as well. The eye-tracking technology will be used to lower resolution in peripheral areas. In addition to these movements, the Apple headset is also said to feature a dial and a “thimble-like” accessory. But the functionality of these buttons haven’t been confirmed yet.

The Bloomberg report has already highlighted that Apple’s first headset is going to be “far more expensive” than its rivals. According to the latest report, Apple could price its AR/VR headset around $3,000 ( ₹2,19,100 approx). In comparison to rivals like the Oculus Quest which costs $299 ( ₹21,900 approx), this one will be exorbitantly high. Apple is expected to launch the product in 2022.
