Huawei Watch 3 with Harmony OS set to launch on June 2

Huawei is gearing up for an event on June 2. Ahead of the official launch, Huawei has begun posting teasers for the upcoming event. Teasers reveal that the company will launch a series of Harmony OS-based devices, including a new smartwatch.

Based on teasers, Huawei will showcase Harmony OS-based ‘Huawei Watch 3’. The official teaser suggests the smartwatch will come with e-SIM functionality. The feature will allow users to make and receive calls on the smartwatch without requiring a smartphone, similar to other smartwatches with e-SIM functionality. According to GSMArena, Huawei has also promised to offer better battery life on the wearable.

That said, the focus would be on Huawei’s in-house Harmony OS. The company had showcased the operating system in August 2019. The company is also hoping to push the operating system as an alternative to Google’s Android.

Earlier this month, Huawei said it would launch its new Harmony operating system for smartphones on June 2. The OS for smartphones would mean the company will no longer be dependent on Android. It is worth noting that US sanctions bar Google from providing services to new Huawei phones and access to its Google Mobile Services.

The company will need to take a more "open source" approach to development and should try to attract more software experts from overseas, according to an internal memo by Huawei CEO Ren Zhengfei.
