iOS 16 is now expected to be a big announcement at the upcoming WWDC22 event! While Apple will only reveal important stuff about the OS at the event, a new leak reveals what we can expect from the next big update for iPhones later this year. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman says that Apple has some big updates planned for this year. Additionally, Apple could also show us a glimpse of its rOS platform that is expected to power its Mixed Reality headset.

Coming to iOS 16 now. Gurman suggests that iOS 16 will bring an improved notifications management system, although there are no specific details shared on how it plans to achieve that. Additionally, he says that iOS 16 will also get new health-tracking features. Beta versions of the iOS 16 have also been said to indicate more references to the Apple VR headset, which could be running on the rumoured rOS operating system. Gurman says that WWDC22 will give us the first glimpse of this operating system but the headset itself is less likely to be announced this year.

New update for iOS, iPadOS, watchOS and more

iOS' notification management system has always been criticized, often termed as inferior to Android by critics. Apple revamped the notifications system a couple of iOS generations ago and also introduced a new Notifications Summary in iOS 14 back in 2020. It remains to be seen which direction does iOS take in handling its notifications system.

One aspect we are all excited to see is iOS 16's backward compatibility. Apple has been quietly increasing the backward compatibility of iOS for its older devices over the years. Last year's iOS 15 was announced for very old iPhone 6S from 2015, and it remains to be seen whether Apple continues to support its 2015 flagship smartphone.

But iOS isn't the only one expected to get a major update at the WWDC22 event. Apple is also said to be working on a revamped version of iPadOS 16 that could bring a redesigned multi-tasking UI. watchOS 9 for the Apple Watch devices will also get new health and activity tracking features. Updates to macOS and tvOS are also coming but there are no details available on that front.
