Apple is going to add the 7th generation iPod Nano to its list of vintage and obsolete products later this month, reports MacRumours. This makes the final iPod in the iconic nano line-up a ‘vintage' device.

Vintage products are devices that have not been sold more than five and less than seven years ago. Once products pass the seven-year mark, they are considered obsolete.

Apple launched a refreshed version of the 7th generation iPod Nano in mid-2015 and that waa the last iPod nano that Apple has made. That device is five years old now and therefore is getting added to the vintage list.

Apple launched the first-ever iPod Nano in September 2005, and over time, the iPod Nano saw a whole bunch of redesigns. The first iPod nano model looked similar to the standard iPod but was shaped to fit into your pocket better

The 2nd-generation iPod Nano was smaller and came in bright aluminum colours. The design in this was very much like the 1st generation model.

The 3rd-generation iPod Nano was more popularly called the "Nano fatty” thanks to its wide, squat design. This was the first significant design change Apple made to the series.

With the 4th-generation iPod Nano, Apple made the device smaller and left the “nano fatty” design behind. The 5th-gen iPod Nano looked more or less like the 4th-gen one.

Apple made a design change with the 6th-gen iPod Nano in 2010. The iconic click wheel was replaced with an all-screen look making the iPod Nano look a lot like the Apple Watch.

The 7th-generation iPod Nano, the final model of the lineup, was launched in October 2012. It came with an iPod Touch-like multi-touch display and a Home button. With this, the iPod Nano and the iPod Touch became so similar that Apple chose to do away with the former.

Apple gave the 7th-gen iPod Nano a refresh in 2015 but it was just in terms of colours. The design remained the same. This indicated that the device was nearing its end of life.

With the iPod Shuffle in mid-2017, the iPod Nano was discontinued. This left the iPod Touch as the sole iPod that Apple still sells.

So what happens to devices on the vintage list?

Devices on the vintage list can still get hardware service from Apple and Apple's service providers and this depends on the availability of repair components, of course. Obsolete products, on the other hand, get no hardware service.

Apple is planning to officially add the seventh-generation iPod Nano to the vintage and obsolete list on September 30, along with the 5th-generation ‌iPod Touch‌, which was originally released on October 11, 2012.
