Huawei, LeEco may start local mobile phone production units

While Huawei is in talks with contract manufacturer Foxconn, LeEco has plans to start its own facility as India is all set to become the largest smartphone in the world

Chinese smartphone companies Huawei and LeEco have said that they are in talks to start local manufacturing of smartphones in the country.

While Huawei is in talks with contract manufacturer Foxconn, LeEco has plans to start its own facility as India is all set to become the largest smartphone in the world. Currently, India is in the second spot followed by China.

"All of them are very bullish on India," IT and Communications minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told Economic Times. "Huawei has sold 1 million phones in India and I have told them that they should now think of making phones in India...They are talking to Foxconn," he added.

Huawei also confirmed the move. "We are evaluating the possibility of manufacturing (phones) in India," Ramu Patchala, executive director of Huawei India, told the newspaper.

The minister also said that the companies have been told to be sensitive to cyber security issues and follow Indian regulations. Talking about LeEco's plans in India, Prasad said: "LeEco is exploring a bigger investment in India.

He added that Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Raipur's electronic cluster, Bhopal and Bhilwada in Rajasthan were suggested for its manufacturing facility.
