Microsoft rolls out Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, launches Surface Book 2
Microsoft says its Surface Book 2 is the most powerful Surface laptop yet.
Microsoft on Tuesday began rolling out an update to its Windows 10 operating system. The new update is focuses on optimising the software for virtual and augmented reality content. The company also introduced its new Surface Book 2 laptop .
The semi-annual update became available Tuesday. Along with virtual experiences, the Fall Creators Update brings new ways to share photos and video and work with 3-D imagery.
Several of Microsoft's partners — Acer, Dell, HP and Lenovo — are simultaneously launching their first "Windows Mixed Reality" headsets on Tuesday. Samsung is releasing one next month.
Microsoft is also announcing a new generation of laptops in its Surface line. Two versions of the new Surface Book 2 — one 13.5 inches and the other 15 inches — will go on sale next month. Starting at $1,499, the powerful computers are aimed at graphic designers and other professionals.
Microsoft Devices Corporate Vice President Panos Panay claimed that the "Surface 2 is the most powerful Surface laptop yet."
"Surface Book 2 removes the barrier between the desktop and the laptop by giving mobile professionals the power of a desktop, the versatility of a tablet, and the freedom of a light and thin laptop in one beautifully designed device. Whether you're a developer, a digital artist, a designer, or an accountant, you can bring your ideas to life anywhere, because Surface Book 2 is a portable powerhouse," he said in a blog post.
The 13.5-inch Surface Book 2 sports 3000 x 2000 pixels resolution and 267ppi pixel density. The bigger variant has 3240 x 2160 pixels resolution and 260ppi pixel density. The new Surface Book 2 is powered by Intel core i7 processor coupled with Nvidia GeForce GTX for graphics. Both the variants come with 8-16GB LPDDR3 RAM and 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage.
Connectivity options include two USB 3.0 ports, USB Type-C, 3.5mm audio jack, Surface Connect among others. Microsoft says the new Surface Book 2 delivers up to 17 hours of video playback. The device comes with sensors such as Ambient light sensor, Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, and Magnetometer.
