No need to be always available, you can set Google Chat status to ‘Away’ on Gmail
This feature is rolling out right now to Gmail on the web as well as on the iOS app. This is not live on Android yet but it is definitely coming soon.
Google Chat is not something you might be using every day, but it does have a place in our lives thanks to Google's enterprise settings. Especiall since G Suite how have the ability to migrate it from Hangouts. In a really small improvement in the given scheme of things, particularly for teams using Google Chat, you can set your status to ‘Away' directly from Gmail.
So, you can turn that green ‘Available' light off. Finally.
Domains that are still using Hangouts can activate this feature indirectly as well by disabling the “show when you were last active” setting, writes Android Police. According to Google, this feature is rolling out right now to Gmail on the web as well as on the iOS app. This is not live on Android yet but it is definitely coming soon.
Also, admins do not need to do anything to turn this on, they have no control over this feature at all. However, end users can now toggle to get the “away” setting on as and when required. The feature is available to most G Suite customers, excluding Essentials.

This new feature adds to the list of things Google has been doing to clean up the Hangouts to Chat transition. The transition is expected to kick in completely by early next year.
