Hate wires? Finnish mobile maker Nokia is reportedly working on a new set of Lumia-branded smartphones that can be recharged without plugging in a power cable and can connect wirelessly with accessories via NFC (near field communication).

Marko Ahtisaari, head of design at Nokia, told the Guardian that the Windows Phone-powered devices will ship without the "flip-up plastic tab that presently covers the micro-USB charger for the phone -- one of just two moving parts on the Lumia 800 phone."

The revelation has led the British newspaper to speculate that Nokia will employ wireless-charging technology in its future devices.

The Palm Pre was one of the first smartphones to be launched with wireless charging. Companies such as LG, Energizer, Powermat and Duracell offer wireless charging mats that can be paired with a special smartphone case for wireless charging.

Nokia's most recent devices have sported a minimalist design that embraces button-free computing. Ahtisaari's comments suggest that Nokia will stick with its design aesthetic while also attempting to illuminate all moving parts and ports.

'If you can take away a moving part and make it [the phone] more beautiful in the placement of the components, we'll do it, so that's something where we can certainly keep improving,' said Ahtisaari to the Guardian. 'Take it to the extreme, and why are there any connectors?'

According to the Guardian, Nokia will also include NFC in the Windows Phone devices -- a feature not found on Nokia's existing 800 and 900 Windows Phones -- allowing for password-free "tap-to-pair" connectivity with Bluetooth accessories such as headsets and speakers.

Bloggers speculate that Nokia will release a new flagship handset called the Nokia Lumia 910 during Mobile World Congress (MWC) in late February.
