SEIKI launches world's first sub-$2000 ultra-high definition TV
It's not the biggest, or the best but with a 50-inch display and a $1500 price tag, it is by far the most value for money of any UHDTV currently available and could be key in popularizing the technology.
It's not the biggest, or the best but with a 50-inch display and a $1500 price tag, it is by far the most value for money of any UHDTV currently available and could be key in popularizing the technology.
Tech sites and experts alike were stunned when Sony unveiled a beautifully-constructed feature-rich UHD TV for 'just' $5000 this month, but following SEIKI's announcement, many were forced to double-check the figures to make sure it wasn't a typographical error.
But, in a statement, the company confirmed that there was no mistake: 'The introduction of Ultra HDTV is perhaps the biggest news since the first arrival of HDTV, and SEIKI is leading the charge to make the next generation of high-definition entertainment attainable for today's television buyers at an affordable price,' said Frank Kendzora, executive vice president at SEIKI.
He also believes that by undercutting competitors by such a huge amount, SEIKI is also enabling owners to future-proof their purchase as the technology that delivers native content is, like the market for the TVs themselves, still in its infancy.
The SEIKI 50-inch 4K2K Ultra HDTV model features 120Hz response rate with built-in digital and analogue channel tuning, and multiple video and audio connections to support current high-definition video content. The model is also packaged with an HDMI 1.4 standard cable to enable video resolutions beyond 1080p.
In terms of true resolution, the display offers four times as many pixels horizontally as an existing HD TV (therefore qualifying to use the term ultra-high definition in its marketing) but at a total density of 3840x2160 is technically twice the resolution of existing HD.
The SEIKI will ship at the end of April to the US where it will be sold through select retailers including Amazon and QVC. It will also be joined later in the year by an equally affordable 65-inch version.
