Okay Google, you tried to rejuvenate interest in your music service by adding support for podcasts, but was the logo redesign necessary?

The Google Play Music app has been easy to find because of its defined and intentional resemblance to headphones -- the only thing other than notes that symbolises music. Last week, Google updated the logo to a triangular play button which doesn't just make me confuse it with a video player, but also agitates with brighter orange and weird arcs over it.

The transition from the old icon, which look quite a lot like headphones, to a more subtle, two-tone vector representation was a welcome move. It was more in line with the Material Design standards and most importantly, didn't bother someone with OCD.

The new logo, however seems more like an orphan with more resemblance to a play button that makes you think of videos until you spot the musical note at the centre. And only if the musical note was a relief. Instead, the note is trapped in a circle that's trapped in another abruptly ending circle. Somehow, the icon misses the point. And makes the app less easy to spot out of the clutter that Android app drawers are.
