As the pandemic began to spread and more offices opted for a remote working environment last year, collaboration and communication tools became the norm. Some older players like Microsoft Teams and Google Meet that existed before the pandemic also opened up access to the public. While there’s no official app for Meet so far, Microsoft Teams has apps for almost every modern platform.

Like most modern cross-platform apps built to work on Windows, macOS and Linux, Microsoft Teams is based on the open-source Electron project. Electron is based on Chromium, which means every app that runs on Electron needs to also load the Chromium code and associated libraries in order to function properly.

However, Electron apps can sometimes suffer from severe memory issues, similar to the complaints that have plagued Chrome users over the years. However, there are ways to mitigate the memory consumption issue on Teams, and you can use these tips for other Electron-based apps that have memory usage issues too.

1. Uninstall and reinstall the Teams app for desktop

Unlike apps like WhatsApp that currently only work on one device, Teams stores all of your chats on Microsoft’s servers so they can be accessed from multiple devices and from the web. This means that even if you uninstall and reinstall Teams, all your chats will still remain available when you log in again. You can uninstall Teams from the Windows ‘Add and Remove Programs’ section, and reinstall by downloading the latest version from Microsoft’s site.

2. Clear the Teams’ app’s cache

Performing an uninstall and then reinstalling Teams may only be a temporary fix. If the memory usage issues are back after re-installing and rebooting your PC, then you can shut down the Teams app, and navigate to the C:\\ drive and open your AppData folder. Open the Microsoft folder and then enter the teams folder. You must delete the folders titled Cache, GPU Cache, blob_storage, databases, IndexedDB and Local Storage. You can then reboot your PC and check if the app continues to use up RAM.

3. Disable GPU acceleration

Depending on what sort of computer you have at home, Microsoft Teams can make use of features like graphics acceleration by loading some user interface elements with a dedicated graphics card. While this can come in handy, it can also cause issues on hardware that has not been configured properly (for e.g. lack of proper drivers) so it is worth disabling GPU hardware acceleration in the Microsoft Teams settings section.
