Green bubble on iPhones – this has been a raging topic among youngsters and Google even has a campaign ongoing to force Apple to adopt the new RCS standard of messages. The discussion was even picked up in the Epic Games vs Apple trial, where Apple’s Craig Federighi said that iMessage is the only obstacle to iPhone families for considering an Android phone for their kids, and Apple doesn’t want that to happen. However, in a recent interview, the topic of RCS was asked to Apple’s CEO Tim Cook and his response was clever.

Based on a report from The Verge, Cook at the Vox Media’s Code 2022 event was asked how Steve Jobs would feel about the idea of RCS in iMessage. Cook replied, “I don’t hear our users asking that we put a lot of energy in on that at this point.” That means that while Google and some other tech giants are making a big deal about the RCS in iMessage thing, Apple isn’t considering that option for its iPhone.

iMessage may continue with the green bubble

But that wasn’t all. Cook added, “I would love to convert you to an iPhone”. The person, Vox Media’s LiQuan Hunt, then said that his mother can’t see the videos he sends on her Android phone. This is due to a lack of interoperability between iMessage and RCS, even though both messaging systems could allow higher-quality images and videos exchanges.Multimedia files, especially videos, lose their quality when you send them via the regular text messaging option.

Tim Cook shunned the discussion, saying, “Buy your mom an iPhone.”

At this stage, it is clear that Apple wants more people to buy the iPhone and subscribe to its services. iMessage has long been an iPhone exclusive feature, using data to send multimedia and texts to other iPhone users. Later, several texting apps like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger offered the same service on a cross platform basis.

iMessage, however, remains the default texting service for many and it is one of the sole reason many iPhone users don’t switch to Android, even if the options are tempting. Plus, people want to avoid the green bubble tag, since texts from non iMessage users are shown in green bubbles.
