Ravi Shankar Prasad on Monday announced India is now the second largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world. The Minister of Law and Justice, and MeitY added that there have been over 300 mobile manufacturing units set up so far.
Prasad also shared that there are 330 million mobile handsets manufactured in India so far. In comparison to 2014, there were 60 million mobile phones manufactured and only 2 plants. The value of mobile handsets produced also increased from $3 billion in 2014 to $30 billion in 2019.
Prasad is also scheduled to announce new schemes for Indian electronics at a press conference on June 2 at 12:00 noon.
Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain also shared the tweet and pointed out how the company has been manufacturing its phones in India. Jain said that 99% of Xiaomi phones are made in India with 65% of parts locally sourced. Xiaomi set up its first manufacturing plant in India five years back.
In-house manufacturing is expected to grow even bigger with more foreign companies setting up plants here. Apple already manufactures some iPhones in India like the iPhone XR. There are reports that suggest Apple is planning to move most of its production from China to India.
South Korean giant Samsung is also quite ahead when it comes to local manufacturing. It even set up the world’s largest mobile factory in India which is located in Noida.
