Gaming on a smartphone has always been a poor experience compared to more powerful computers and gaming consoles, thanks to smaller screens and limited graphics capabilities. It looks like that is all set to change, with AMD announcing that it will bring its RDNA 2 graphics to smartphone chipsets in the future.

The announcement was made by AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su, at AMD’s keynote address at the ongoing Computex 2021 conference. According to Dr Su, the company will work with South Korean tech giant Samsung in order to bring RDNA 2 capabilities like the latest PlayStation and Xbox consoles to deliver high-end graphics performance on the company’s Exynos processor for mobile devices.

According to Su, the next chipset should be able to support advanced features like ray tracing and variable rate shading, which promises graphics performance never seen on smartphones. If the company’s RDNA 2 technology does make its way to the next Exynos processor, gamers may be able to tap into graphics features that are found only on computers with graphics cards from Nvidia and AMD, and consoles like the Xbox X and the PlayStation 5.

In addition to this, Su also confirmed that the company’s Radeon GPU and Ryzen Accelerated Processing Unit (APU) will both feature on Tesla’s upcoming Model S and Model X, but we will only know more when the latter makes a formal announcement in the future.

Samsung and AMD have reportedly been working on enhancing the company’s processors for two years now, which means performance expectations will be high. Dr Su did not specify which upcoming Exynos chipset is likely to feature AMD’s RDNA 2 technology.

We have previously reported on Samsung’s plans for a mobile processor to rival Apple’s revolutionary M1 chipset. Samsung could take advantage of the chip to offer increased performance on its smartphones, tablets and computers, according to reports.
