There’s no doubt that Samsung makes some of the best folding smartphones at the moment. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 and Z Fold 3 are the most refined folding smartphones you can buy, and with the Fold 4 generation on the horizon, things could simply get better. Samsung is not content with that, however, and is working on making these foldable devices cheaper. Hence, Samsung could be bringing foldable phones under the Galaxy A series, its popular midrange series of smartphones.

Based on rumours emerging from Korean website ETnews, it is said that Samsung is working on a foldable smartphone that could have a starting price under $771. The folding smartphone could be coming as part of the Galaxy A series and as a result, it could giving up on several basic features. Plans for an affordable foldable were shelved previously but due to the rising competition, Samsung is now considering making that happen.

Cheaper Samsung Fold in the works

It is said that Samsung could be bringing the Galaxy A Fold with the book-style form factor already found on the Galaxy Z Fold 3. Eventually, the Galaxy A could also get a Flip style foldable to go down further the price ladder. Being a Galaxy A, Samsung could be cutting corners to achieve a lower price, as is the case with Galaxy A devices.

Rumours suggest that the Ultra Thin Glass used on the flagship foldables won’t be used on the Galaxy A foldables. That means we could be seeing a plastic display as seen on the first gen Galaxy Fold. These models could also see the luxuries omitted. Does this mean a Galaxy A Fold will have a tiny Cover Display, a plastic body, fewer cameras, and a midrange chipset? Only time will tell.

Currently, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 is the most affordable folding smartphone you can buy today. Starting at Rs. 84,557, the Flip 3 offers last year’s Snapdragon 888 chipset, a 6.7-inch foldable AMOLED display with 120hz refresh rate, a tiny Cover Display for notifications and widgets, and a 3300mAh battery. It is water resistant too.
