iPhone 14 leaks are only getting more interesting than ever, and the latest one makes selfie lovers hopeful. So far, we have known that the iPhone 14 series will gain a new member in the form of the iPhone 14 Max. And that the Pro models will get a big camera sensor upgrade this year. However, not much has happened to the selfie camera on the iPhone for years and Apple is now set to do something about it. In fact, it could take away the lead Samsung has with its selfie cameras on its flagship models.
The iPhone 14 series is said to get two new upgrades to its front camera, says popular Apple analyst Mung-Chi Kuo. Kuo has been fairly reliable with his leaks and predictions in the past, which gives us more reasons to believe this development. He says that Apple is considering giving the front camera a new lens with a larger f/1.9 aperture. Additionally, this camera will also gain the ability to do autofocusing, just like its rear cameras. The upgrades are making it to all the iPhone 14 variants, not just the Pro models.
Having these two upgrades on the iPhone’s front camera could have huge implications for selfie lovers. With a larger aperture lens, the iPhone could technically improve its low-light camera performance. The presence of auto-focus could also help with a much better depth-of-field effect (background blurring). Hence, the iPhone may not need to do portrait mode with artificial blurring and could challenge Samsung’s industry-leading subject separation.
The autofocus feature can also help with better background blurring while doing video calls, and could also help with Centre Stage. Kuo does not say whether Apple will use a higher resolution image sensor for the front camera.
Currently, the iPhone 13 series has one of the best selfie cameras in the business but rival Samsung outdoes it with its high-res selfie camera on its flagship Galaxy S22 Ultra. In fact, Samsung has been using the autofocus technology on its Galaxy S front cameras for several years now, offering much better background-blurring effect. The iPhone 13’s artificial portrait cutout looks artificial and the iPhone 14 could benefit from the natural bokeh effect.
That’s not all though. The Pro models this year are getting rid of the display notch as well. To know more, keep an eye out on HT Tech for all the latest scoop on the iPhone 14.
