It will be greedy to ask for everything from a budget tablet. Under Rs. 20,000, tablets are all meant for offering a decent viewing experience with a set of great speakers and a decent performance to handle your day-to-day tasks from reading to browsing. And the new Moto Tab G62 LTE perfectly fits the description for budget tablets. At least, the specs say that! It gets 4G connectivity to let you make calls in no Wi-Fi range, a face unlock system, quad speaker setup and stock Android experience to keep the device simple and useful for everyone - everything at the cost of Rs. 17,999. While bringing some of the interesting and essential features on board, does Moto Tab G62 become a perfect budget tablet over its tough competition from Realme, Oppo, Samsung and others? Let's find out.

Moto Tab G62 Design

As usual, Motorola follows its old tradition of carrying a minimalist design, which we have seen in its Android smartphones and now on tablets. Just like its previous attempt at Moto Tab G70, it gets a dual-tone design – more than half dipped in a metallic matte finish, while the rest is of plastic which picks up smudges occasionally. It looks simple yet elegant in its only Frost Blue colour shade. At 465 grams, it doesn’t feel heavy with its great work done on weight distribution, still, it can be uncomfortable to use for long hours. Also, sturdy build quality, an IP52 rating and the presence of a 3.5mm audio jack are some winning points of the Moto Tab G62 at this price.

While at the front, it features identical thick bezels on all the sides and a selfie camera sits at the centre of the right side to bring a more laptop-like feel while video calling. Still, you won’t find any keyboard case along to make it work like a laptop, nor a stylus (despite the fact it supports Pen features!). That means you will need to spend an extra penny to get one, and sweat it out in the third-party accessory market!

Moto Tab G62 Display

One of the core purposes to get a tablet is a large display. Of course, your smartphone can do almost everything, but to have a grand experience for binge-watching, reading or maybe doodling – here’s what tablets are for. And the Moto Tab G62 does a pretty job at this. It features a large 10.6-inches LCD screen with up to a 2K resolution, which is bright and vibrant. The support of Widevine L1 lets you enjoy Netflix and Amazon Prime shows in HD, while YouTube videos will be limited to 1080p. Another prickly thing is that it gets the basic 60Hz refresh rate and the effect is visible in scrolling and moving animations. Having said that, the display is decent for long hours of watching videos, even though we would have preferred a more lively display quality.

Moto Tab G62 Performance

And.. that entertainment-purposed display is coupled with Dolby Atmos quad-speakers here to add to the experience! It is loud, clear, and offers decent bass to the ears. The rest depends on its Snapdragon 680 chipset, which offers languish performance to most of the tasks. Reading, web-browsing, and having long hours with the Moto Tab G62 for binge-watching are fine. But when it is about multitasking, social media scrolling, or gaming, the lags and jitters will check your patience. The gaming experience with the Moto Tab G62 is strictly limited to basic games such as Subway Surfers, Temple Run, and more for a shorter duration. We have seen the Oppo Pad Air with the same chipset optimised in a much better fashion, and I believe Motorola can do the same -- this tablet needs optimisation urgently.

Motorola brings its stock-Android-like experience with the Tab G62, which comes with Android 12 out-of-the-box. That means, no adware, no bloatware. Widgets and animations are there, but it is limited in wallpapers and other customisation options.

The Moto Tab G62 also gets an 8MP rear camera which is decent for document scanning, but don't expect much for capturing detailed images even in well-lit areas. Surprisingly, it also gets the same 8MP front camera which is fine for quick video calls and unlocking your device with face recognition quickly.

Unlike many other budget tablets, the Moto Tab G62 LTE offers 4G connectivity in addition to Wi-Fi at this price, to make calls just like your smartphone. With my Airtel 4G SIM, the calling experience was seamless without any issues.

Moto Tab G62 Battery

The stamina of the Moto Tab G62 with its 7,700 mAh battery makes it handle all your tablet stuff for 1.5-2 days. That includes playing casual games, watching videos, having a couple of quick video calls, and web browsing religiously. Even with casual stuff such as reading and watching shows, you can easily get it through up to 3 days. Sadly, the long battery life settles with a 20W charging support, which takes around 2 hours and 15 minutes to juice it up from 1-100 percent.

Verdict

The Moto Tab G62 LTE could be a perfect budget tablet for those seeking a giant and colour-rich display,as well as rich and loud sound to make it your go-to binge-watching device. Even the battery life is impressive. Moreover, the presence of 4G connectivity, a 3.5mm audio jack, and the face recognition unlock system adds to the value. Cameras are decent to take care of random document scanning tasks and video calling.

But it skipped checking the most important tick box -- performance, and user experience! And that just spoils the overall experience of the Moto Tab G62 LTE -- even basic tasks make it frustrating to use. Maybe a better chipset or better optimisation could have solved this loophole. But here, Motorola missed a great opportunity to deliver the best budget tablet.

Why should you buy Moto Tab G62 LTE then? There are not many reasons to recommend this tablet over its competition. But still, if all you need is a tablet for catching up with your weekly shows or something for your kids, you can consider this. Otherwise, the Oppo Pad Air is there for you with a better overall user experience. While paying Rs. 2000 more, the Realme Pad X offers a much better chipset, good set of cameras, and even longer battery life.
