Gadget review: Micromax Canvas P680 Tab

Micromax's latest offering from its warehouse of tablets is the affordable, lightweight P680. Running on Android 5.0 (Lollipop), this 3G-enabled tablet is priced at ₹9,500, and promises to score high on the graphics segment. However, while it comes with a flattering list of specifications (see box), the device is far from impressive.

What's good: The device is definitely a welcome respite from the bulky tablets available in the market, which are uncomfortable to carry around. The metallic copper finish is also a feast for the eyes. Fortunately, the tablet does not come with excessive malware, and the user can choose to uninstall pre-existing apps. Thus, the product scores high on saving space and graphics. The colours are bright and detailing is sharp. For basic usage, we felt the 16GB of internal memory was sufficient.

What's not: The device was rather erratic in terms of the battery life. During the three weeks of using the tablet, we were never sure about how long it would last on a single, full charge. The device's performance was inconsistent — it worked well on some days, while on others, it lagged. Design-wise, the weird placement of the speakers at the back of the device, led to us covering the audio output while holding the tab. Moreover, the audio quality was substandard, to say the least.

Verdict: It's a basic tablet which is most likely to fit a small budget, but there's nothing extraordinary about its performance.
