Chrome’s next update could help increase battery life of your laptop by up 2 hours

Google’s Chrome is notorious for hogging resources on a PC. The company has been trying to address the issue with the recent updates. Now, Google is working on a new update for Chrome that could help increase the battery life of your laptop.

Google’s Chrome v86 is likely to come with a new mechanism wherein it will restrict JavaScript timer wake ups for the background webpages. The timer could be set to 1 per minute akin to what Apple does on its Safari browser, reports The Windows Club.

The website says the feature will be available for Chrome OS, Linux, Windows, Mac, and Android.

Citing a technical document, TWC said that Google conducted a test under which 36 random tabs were opened in the background while the Javascript timer was set to 1 per minute. After the test, Google discovered that the battery life was extended by up to 2 hours on the PC. Google also ran different variations of the test to conclude the battery efficiency with the new update.

As said earlier, Google’s Chrome browser has constantly drawn flak for draining the battery of a device. Rival Apple and Microsoft have well leveraged this to tout their respective browsers as more battery efficient.

Right now, it is not clear when the feature will be available. If rolled out, Google will finally stand a chance to become a preferred browser for power users. According to the TWC, Google will soon give developers the flexibility to delay the Javascript timer by more than 5 seconds.
