Reliance Industries at its 43rd annual general meeting, which was held virtually in wake of the pandemic, launched Jio Glass, a Mixed Reality (MR) enabled smart glass that enables users to connect with the world around them virtually.

“Jio’s latest innovation, Jio Glass, is at the cutting edge of technology that provides best-in-class Mixed Reality services to give users a truly meaningful immersive experience,” RIL President Kiran Thomas said at the AGM while introducing Jio Glass.

There is a lot that we don’t know about the Jio Glass yet, such as its price and availability. We also don’t know the extent of Jio Glass’ capabilities. But thanks to the demo at the AGM, we know a number of things about Jio Glass’ features and functionalities.

So here are top five things you need to know about Jio Glass:

-- Design wise, it looks a lot like a combination of Bose Frames and Snapchat Spectacles. However, unlike Spectacles that has two cameras near the two lenses, Jio Glass has a camera in the middle. Additionally, the two smart glasses, Jio Glass has built-in speakers and battery that are safely tucked inside the two legs. Bonus: It weighs just 75 grams.

-- Jio Glass already supports 25 apps and the company says that it is adding support for more.

-- In terms of audio and video, Jio Glass supports HD quality video and it supports all standard audio formats.

-- In terms of functionality, Jio Glass is powered by Mixed Reality. This means that users can interact with others over a conference call, who can join them either in their 3D avatar or the regular 2D video call format. In addition to that users also share and view content on a giant virtual screen that is somewhat similar to the Oculus VR headset.

-- Lastly, Jio Glass seems to be compatible with voice commands. While the company didn’t explicitly state it at the demo, however, Thomas was able to call Akash Ambani and Isha Ambani simply by asking Jio, which presumably is the wake word for the virtual assistant powering Jio Glass to do so.
