Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier review: It’s quieter and better

Dyson hasn’t changed anything about the design of its Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool, in my opinion, it doesn’t need to as its design is quite elegant and it gets the job done perfectly.

It's that time of the year again. No, we are not talking about Christmas but about the time when the air in the northern parts of the country gets unbearably toxic to breathe and the visibility drops significantly not due to fog but due to pollution. If you have skimmed through the news lately, you would know that the air quality index in north India, particularly Delhi NCR is reaching dangerously high levels marking the constantly worsening air quality and the schools and government offices have been shut down or switched to a work from home setup for a week -- a move that is likely to help people stay indoors where they are expected to be somewhat protected from this toxic air. I say somewhat because the impact of this constantly degrading air quality can also be seen inside in the form of headaches and irritation in the eyes unless of course, you live in a house that has a dedicated air purifier unit in each corner, which in Indian households is still a luxury.

Ahead of this yearly menace, Dyson launched two new air purifiers in India -- the Dyson Purifier Cool, which is priced at INR 45,900 in India, and the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cold -- the star of this review -- that was launched in the country at a price of INR 55,900. It is the successor to the Hot+Cool range of purifiers that the company has launched in the past.

If you look at the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cold from afar, nothing much has changed. It has the same elliptical loop design that is akin to most Dyson air purifiers along with a rotating base and a remote controller. And just like older Hot+Cool air purifier models, this newly launched air purifier comes with a heating coil that is hidden inside its elliptical head. But on taking a closer look, rather, on spending some time with it, you will understand the subtle upgrades that Dyson has made to make the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cold more effective than before.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier: Design

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cold features the same elliptical loop-like design that we all have gotten used to seeing in the past couple of years. This elliptical loop disperses purifier air from the front and, in the diffused mode, from behind. It sits on top of a cylindrical structure that has a coloured LED display, which displays the AQI, the level of PM 10, PM 2.5 and the filter health on a tiny circular screen that is placed near the power button. Below is the heart and soul of the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cold. It is where all the alchemy happens. It's also the place where the polluted unbreathable air gets converted into something that is safe for everyone to inhale.

The cylindrical structure has hundreds of tiny holes that take in the toxic air from the environment. This air then passes through several layers of filters inside. It is then dispersed through the elliptical loop on top. The cylindrical heart of this air purifier sits on top of a disk-like structure that enables the air purifier unit on top to rotate at an angle of up to 350 degrees. It also makes it possible to be titled a bit forward or a bit backwards depending on the users' needs.

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cold is accompanied by a remote controller that can be used to control every aspect of the device right from the kind of air to be projected (hot or cool), degree of rotation, timer, fan speed, and sleep mode among other things. And if that isn't enough for you, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cold can also be controlled using the Dyson Link app or smart assistants including Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant.

Overall, the design of this air purifier is ingenious and incredibly modern. It easily blends in any environment that you put it in and it is safe to use even when you have toddlers in your house. While it has holes all around its cylindrical base, they aren't large enough for anything to go inside. And although Dyson hasn't changed anything about the design of its Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool, in my opinion, it doesn't need to as its design is quite elegant and it gets the job done perfectly.

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier does sound quieter and calmer even as it disperses purified air at the maximum fan speed.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier: Performance

Now comes the performance. I live in Delhi NCR, whereas you must have heard by now, the situation in terms of the air quality is quite grim. I started using the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier just before things started getting from bad to worse here. On the outside, it looked like the onset of winters, when the region is covered in a blanket of fog. But constant headaches, irritation in the eyes and nose and coughing told a different tale. It wasn't fog but pollution.

When I started using the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier, the air quality was already in the purple zone with the AQI outside touching the mark of 600 and above. It took this air purifier close to 45 minutes to bring it down to safe levels, that is, within the green zone in the master bedroom of my house, which is where I spend most of my time working. Every time I opened the door to fetch a bottle of water or a cup of tea, the air quality level in the room would shoot up to the red zone. Fortunately, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool waved its magic wand and restored the air quality level back to safe levels within no time. Outside the room where there are no air purifiers, I could feel the irritation in my eyes and constant headaches -- not a pretty sight.

As far as the heating part is concerned, Dyson has not made any changes to this aspect of the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier. The philosophy here is very simple: don't change what's not broken.

Now the feature that the company has made changes to. Dyson folks told me that their engineers had worked on the acoustics of this machine and made it 20% quieter than the previous generation model by widening the aperture of the slot in which the air exits the machine, which in turn reduced the amount of friction between the air and surface of the machine resulting in less sound.

In practice, the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier does sound quieter and calmer even as it disperses purified air at the maximum fan speed. In my experience, this is true when it is dispersing out cool air. When you have turned the heater on and fan speed is set to high, the acoustics remain almost the same compared to the older models, which isn't too high at all. And if this sound is still a bit much for you, you can always turn on the night mode from the remote controller to turn down the volume completely.

Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier: Conclusion

Now, the million-dollar question: should you buy the Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier or not?

In one word: Yes.

The Dyson Purifier Hot+Cool air purifier has everything that you need in an air purifier, especially if you are living in the northern parts of the country where air pollution becomes a problem, particularly in the winter months. It has excellent air purification capabilities whose effect you can notice just by stepping out of the room where you have placed it in. It features an elegant design and it can be controlled via multiple ways (remote controller, Dyson Link app and Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa). To add to the mix, it works as an excellent room heater. And if you are living in the parts of the country where you don't need a room heater, you can always opt for the Dyson Purifier Cool air purifier.

Sure it costs a bit much. After all, INR 55,900 is an investment not everyone can make, but what is some extra money in front of the health of your loved ones?
