iPhone 14 Max! This year, we are probably going to see a new variant of the iPhone that could help Apple push numbers during the festive season. The iPhone 13 Mini won't see a successor and instead, Apple is said to bring the iPhone 14 Max — a larger version of the regular iPhone 14 almost as big as the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Because after the disappointing sales of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 13 Mini for two years in a row, Apple now knows that people love big screen phones and Apple is going to give it to them.

The iPhone 14 Max will follow in the footsteps of the iPhone 14, which itself is said to get minimum upgrades over the iPhone 13. Early rumours had suggested that the iPhone 14 won't see major changes from the iPhone 13 of 2021. Even the chipset is said to remain the same as the iPhone 13 — the A15 Bionic chip instead of the new A16, which is said to power the iPhone 14 Pro models. That does not bode well for this new Apple flagship, especially at a time when Samsung, Oppo and Xiaomi are giving the iPhone 13 a very tough time.

iPhone 14 Max: A look at the rumours

First and foremost, the price. It is said that the iPhone 14 Max could carry a starting price of $800 for its base 128GB variant, which is almost the same price as the iPhone 13. The iPhone 14 could see a reduction in price this year owing to the lack of the cheaper Mini version. The use of the older A15 chip could help Apple achieve that, as well as a minimum upgrade list.

Next, the iPhone 14 Max is all about the size. With its 6.7-inch rumoured dimensions, the iPhone 14 Max could be almost the same size as the iPhone 13 Pro Max. Compared to the 6.1-inch iPhone 13, that's a serious improvement in screen real estate. The 6.7-inch display is said to use an OLED panel with the same display notch you see on the iPhone 13. Later rumours have hinted at the possibility of a 90Hz refresh rate, although that is doubtful.

The bigger size could also mean a bigger capacity battery. The iPhone 13 Pro Max is the battery champ at the moment with its sub-4000mAh battery. The iPhone 14 Max could use a smaller battery than that to keep the costs low but it could still beat the iPhone 14 with its runtime. If the display stays at 60Hz, the iPhone 14 Max could be the battery king this year.

But this is where the interesting list of upgrades ends. The iPhone 14 Max is still said to retain dual cameras at the back, limited to a wide and ultra-wide. And these cameras could use the 12MP sensors instead of the new 48MP sensor expected to grace the iPhone 14 Max.

Is the Max enough to fight Android flagships?

On paper, that looks doubtful. In a world where phones like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Plus and Xiaomi 12 Pro exist, the iPhone 14 Max could face a tough time. In fact, even before its release, the Samsung Galaxy S22 and Xiaomi 12 Pro seem to have one-upped the iPhone 14 Max in terms of raw specifications.

Even if the iPhone 14 Max gets a 90Hz OLED display, the Galaxy S22 Plus trumps it with its 120Hz variable refresh rate AMOLED display; the Xiaomi 12 Pro beats them both with its Quad HD+ 1Hz-120Hz AMOLED display. Both Samsung and Xiaomi offer a triple camera setup, with the addition being a telephoto camera for better zoom. The Galaxy S22 Plus gets faster 25W charging while the Xiaomi 12 Pro decimates it with its 120W charging and 50W wireless charging, both charging much quicker.

Will the iPhone 14 Max survive?

Yes, and there are two aspects to this:

1. All we know about the iPhone 14 Max are just rumours and there is a long time before Apple announces them to the public. Hence, things could change and iPhone 14 Max could turn out to be better than we assume.

2. Even if the iPhone 14 Max comes out this way, it will be a smashing hit among consumers. Just look at the iPhone 13's huge demand even after months of its release — despite having a 60Hz display and just two cameras, you will see the iPhone 13 everywhere. You don't see that many Galaxy S22 or Xiaomi 12 Pro around. iPhone fans prefer a solid iOS ecosystem experience, reliable cameras, and a great battery life. The iPhone 14 Max will only be more of that and who wouldn't want it if money permits? I would myself.
