Google honours Sarojini Naidu on her 135th birthday

Sarojini Naidu, also known as the Nightingale of India, was honoured by Google with a doodle to mark her 135th birthday on Thursday.

The doodle has the freedom fighter's portrait as well as a pen to recognise the poet who began writing at the age of 13.

Born on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad to Aghore Nath Chattopadhyay and Barada Sundari Debi, Naidu was the first woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress in 1925 as well as the first female governor of an Indian state. She was also one of the framers of the Indian Constitution.

She went to England at the age of 16 on a scholarship to study in King's College and later enrolled at Girton College, Cambridge.

Naidu joined the Indian freedom movement after partition of Bengal in 1905 and was an active member of the Civil Disobedience movement.

She is known for The Golden Threshold, her first collection of poems published in 1905, The Bird of Time (1912) and the Broken Wing (1917).

She fell in love with Dr Govindarajulu Naidu and married him when she was 19. The couple had five children.

Naidu suffered a heart attack and died on March 2, 1949 at Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.
