Born on February 13, 1879 in Hyderabad to Aghore Nath Chattopadhyay and Barada Sundari Debi, Naidu was the first woman to become the president of the Indian National Congress in 1925 as well as the first female governor of an Indian state. She was also one of the framers of the Indian Constitution.

She is known for The Golden Threshold, her first collection of poems published in 1905, The Bird of Time (1912) and the Broken Wing (1917).
