HCL's Comnet Radio can turn geeks into poets
HCL's new audio e-zine comes fully loaded with fun and facts, writes Sudeshna B Baruah.
Picture this: A radio newsletter with a fun quotient will act as a platform of communication between you and your boss. It was to see the fruition of such an idea that IT services company HCL Comnet's Noida office's cafeteria was packed to capacity. Well, mostly with bespectacled Comnetians in their 20s. Why not when RJ Nitin of Radio Mirchi's Ulta-Pulta Nitin fame was there to inaugurate HCL's intranet audio e-zine - Comnet Radio.
Doesn't a radio newsletter sound quite new in the Indian context? 'Indeed, HCL is world's first organisation to have an interactive medium of this kind', says J Kalyanaraman, vice-president, human capital management, HCL Comnet. But why an audio e-zine as medium of interaction ? 'It is not for the first time that we have come up with an idea like this. At HCL Comnet, we constantly strive to connect employer to the employees through one medium or another. But most of the mediums are static. We were on hunt for a more hep device.
It was with this aim in mind that our young eight-member communications team did an internal survey on a multiplicity of ideas. The idea of a radio e-zine was one of them. So, we thought, why not give this medium a shape. This is Comnet Radio was born', he adds.
What are the elements that feature on Comnet Radio? Atul Gupta, a member of the HCL Noida's communications team says, 'Comnet Radio is quintessentially a step towards bridging the employer-employee hiatus. We needed a mint-fresh medium for the purpose.

Something that attracts the young Comnetians and gives them a relaxed feel. Entertainment, hence, is a major streak on Comnet Radio. Other components are interactive sessions like
Janta Ki Awaz
, one-on-one with senior management,
Babbar shers
, contests
et al
. All these features are conceived with the fun quotient in view. However, we do not intend to rope in celebrities or radio jockeys for the purpose. Being an intranet concept, Comnet Radio will be about Comnetians by Comnetains', Atul avers.
And does a Comnet Radio script work? 'The scripts would be fed by Comnetians themselves on the radio intranet site and would also be culled from other mediums. The same would be then recorded internally and interspersed with the Top 5 Hit tracks (as polled on site). CDs of the same would be then played in canteens. No airwaves will however be used', adds Zulfian.
But isn't it too much of all play and no work? 'Yes. We have used fun methods of engaging with the employees. But at the end of the day it is the employee morale that counts. I am sure Radio Comnet would sure prove exemplary', says Kalyanaraman.
We cannot but agree with him. What with the sound of laughter that rent the air as Comnetians displayed their knack for shairis and the entire audience burst into peals of laughter. Wish you all the luck, HCL on your maiden venture.
