Press invites to a June 3 product launch event suggest that the web browser company is set to unveil a tablet to complement its open source smartphones.

Although Mozilla refuses to give any further details other than that the launch in question is for a device, not a service, the developer of the Firefox web browser has revealed that it is working in partnership with Foxconn -- Apple's supply chain partner of choice -- to build the gadget, and that the gadget will run the Firefox OS operating system -- all of which points to a new tablet.

Mozilla announced that it was developing its own, open source smartphone operating system in 2011 and that it would do away with closed app stores and run web-based apps instead because the phone's operating system is essentially a web browser (the same principle as Google's own Chrome OS used in its Chromebook computers -- software applications are browser extensions or browser apps).

Many in the industry admired the company's sentiment but also suggested it was too little too late. However, fast forward to the present and there are already two Firefox OS phones on the market, and the company has the support of a number of major network carriers around the world and, what's more, LG, Sony and ZTE have all announced that they will be launching Firefox phones this year.

And while a Firefox OS phone or even a tablet might not get the average iPhone owner excited, the devices could be the key to offering emerging markets such as in Latin America and across Asia a well-built, affordable smartphone and one for which anyone who knows how to code for the web can write applications.
