NASA: Moon Base location for humans revealed by Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

NASA has revealed it has found the perfect spot for building its moon base on the surface of the moon. The spot has highly favourable conditions, having one of the mildest temperatures found on the entire moon, albeit being in a cave. Here’s more about it.

NASA has found the perfect location on the surface of the moon to build a lunar base in the near future, NASA has revealed. The location is based inside a lunar pit where the temperatures are mild, unlike the rest of the lunar surface where temperature extremities make it nearly impossible for life to sustain. Notably, surface temperatures can go from an extremely high 127 degrees Celsius and as low as -173 degrees Celsius. (NASA)

Noah Petro, LRO project scientist at NASA said “Lunar pits are a fascinating feature on the lunar surface. Knowing that they create a stable thermal environment helps us paint a picture of these unique lunar features and the prospect of one day exploring them.” David Paige, a co-author of the paper who leads the Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment aboard LRO said “Humans evolved living in caves, and to caves we might return when we live on the Moon.” (NASA)

Lunar pit
The particular pit used to analyze the thermal properties by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter was in an area of the Moon known as the Mare Tranquillitatis. It is 100-meters deep and as wide as a football field. According to scientists, the overhang of the pit is responsible for creating shadows on the Moon and maintaining a temperature of nearly 17 degrees Celsius at all times. (NASA)
