Pebble watches now support Android Wear

All smartwatches past and present made by the company that started off life as a Kickstarter campaign can now work with apps developed for the growing range of smartwatches that run Google's wearable technology operating system.

All smartwatches past and present made by the company that started off life as a Kickstarter campaign can now work with apps developed for the growing range of smartwatches that run Google's wearable technology operating system.

The company has been testing the new feature in beta since December and now it is officially ready. Once the software update is installed, anyone who already owns one of the company's smartwatches and prefers an Android handset over an iPhone will be able to get a host of new functionality.

The update means that if your Android smartphone is running an Android Wear compatible app, your Pebble watch can send app notifications and receive responses, just like any of the current crop of official Android Wear watches from Samsung, LG and Motorola.

However, the Pebble watch will also still be able to work with all of the apps in Pebble's own app store.

Despite its crowdfunded origins, Pebble has to date sold 1 million smartwatches, and although the competition is growing the company has so far managed to hold its own.

As well as this new update, Pebble's CEO, Eric Migicovsky has promised that much more is to come in 2015 in terms of both new software and new devices.
