Tablets account for less than 5% of all web traffic: study
It seems that reports of the PC's death have been wildly exaggerated as the desktop is still king when it comes to surfing the web.
It seems that reports of the PC's death have been wildly exaggerated as the desktop is still king when it comes to surfing the web.
According to new research published this week by StatCounter, global tablet usage was just 4.8 percent of all web traffic in November and most of that was made up by the iPad. Apple currently accounts for 74.5 % of total tablet internet usage, with Samsung a distant second with 10.85 %.
'The perception is that tablets are proliferating and replacing traditional PC and laptop machines so we developed our research platform to isolate tablet usage stats,' said Aodhan Cullen, CEO of StatCounter. 'In reality we found that tablet internet usage globally at less than 5% is still relatively small compared to desktop and mobile.'
In stark contrast, PCs still account for 76.1 % of web traffic, while mobile devices, i.e., smartphones and 3G or 4G-enabled computers, made up 19.1 %.
StatCounter also broke down the figures for the US and UK and found that tablets make up 6.8 % of web traffic, 80.3 % of which is generated by iPads.
The Amazon Kindle is the second most popular device (7.4%) followed by Samsung's tablet range, which accounts for 4.2 %.
In the UK, where tablet adoption is greater and accounts for nearly a tenth (9.6%) of web traffic, Apple is also king with 80.4 % of that share. Samsung is second with 6.5 % and the Kindle is third with 4.4 %.
