Tata Power hit by cyberattack! This is what happened

Tata Powers said some of its IT systems were impacted by the cyber attack. Know what happened.

Tata Power IT system hit by a cyber attack! Tata Power has confirmed that a cyberattack has hit its Information Technology infrastructure and affected its systems, a BSE filing from the Mumbai-headquartered company confirmed. As a safety measure, the company has taken the steps to restore the system. The critical operational systems are functioning normally now, as protective measures of restricted access and preventive checks have been positioned in place for employees.

"The company has taken steps to retrieve and restore the systems. All critical operational systems are functioning. Restricted access and preventive checks have been put in place for employee and customer facing portals and touch points." Tata Power said in a BSE filing. The company added, "The company will update you on the matter going forward.”

Meanwhile, a senior official from the Maharashtra Police's cyber wing told PTI that "an intelligence input had been received about the threat to Tata Power and other electricity companies." Also, all the concerned companies related to the matter have been alerted, while an audit and check of firewalls is underway.

This is not the first time..

This comes after a month when Union Power Minister R.K. Singh said that India`s power network will soon be more future-ready and protected from cyber attacks via routine inspections provision and timely action under the new Electricity Amendment Bill. However, this is not the first time that cyber attackers have hit the national power grid IT system. The Power Minister had also informed that earlier this year, there were cyber attacks on the national power grid. He mentioned, “These were probing attacks in December, January and February. They did not succeed. But we are aware."

For now, Tata Powers says they will inform about the further development in regard to the recent cyberattack.
