Nintendo's ventures outside the realm of video gaming continue as it partners with streaming specialist Netflix for an original series based on 'The Legend of Zelda.'
Offering an all-age fantasy adventure based on an already well-known franchise, the 'Zelda' series will be like 'Game of Thrones' but for a family audience, according to the Wall Street Journal's source.
The project is still at an early stage, needing a writer to start fleshing out the concept, but has been conceived of as a live-action series. That's in contrast to its last televisual excursion, which was as a 1989 animated cartoon spin-off.
Upwards of 20 'Zelda' games have been released in the near 30 years since February 1986's debutant on the Japanese Famicom, and the series' triangular Triforce symbol has become a piece of classic gaming iconography.
Recent years have seen the company double down on nostalgia, technological advancements, and a generation gap that means many fans did not have the opportunity to follow its best known series right from the start, by overhauling and reissuing several key 'Zelda' titles for the Wii U home console and portable Nintendo 3DS.
'The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask 3D' is one such example, a tweaked and enhanced 3DS version of the year 2000's N64 console original, while a new home console game has been announced for the Wii U with a 2015 date in mind.
