Google Search dark mode finally rolled out; Here’s how to get it

Google first introduced a system-wide dark mode with the launch of Android 10 back in 2019. Since then, Google has been consistently adding support for the dark mode to its various products and services. Earlier this year, Google started testing its dark mode feature in Google Search on the web. Now, nearly five months later, Google has announced that it has finally started rolling out the Google Search dark mode on the web.

“I'm thrilled to announce that starting today & fully rolling out over the next few weeks, Dark theme is now available for Google Search pages on desktop. Thank you for all your feedback on this forum letting us know that this was a feature you wanted to see,” Google Search Product Support Manager Hung F wrote in an announcement on the Google Search help page.

With this update, Google Search users can turn Google’s service dark whether they are accessing Search on their mobile devices or via browsers on their personal computers. Google said that once users have selected the dark theme in Google Search on the web, all the Google Search pages including the Google homepage, search results page, and Search settings will turn dark.

Step 1: Open Google Search on your PC browser.

Step 2: At the top right, click Settings Search settings.

Step 3: On the left, click Appearance.

Step 4: Choose Device default, Dark, or Light,

--Device default: Automatically match the color scheme of your current device

-- Dark: Light text on a dark background

-- Light: Dark text on a light background

Step 5: At the bottom, click Save.

It is worth noting that while Google started testing dark mode in Google Search on the Web back in March this year, it rolled out support for dark mode in its Google Search app on Android and iOS in May last year.

How to get Google Search dark mode in-app on Android - A step-by-step guide:

Step 1: On your Android smartphone, open the Google Chrome browser.

Step 2: At the top right, tap More > Settings > Themes.

Step 3: Choose the theme you would like to use: System Default, Dark or Light

Step 4: At the bottom, click Save.
