Twitter restarted its verification process for the first time on May 21 after discontinuing it in 2017. However, the platform abruptly paused it a few days later stating that they were not taking any requests till they reviewed the applications they have already received. Given that they had opened up their verification channel after a three-year gap, they must have gotten bombarded with verification requests to get that exclusive blue tick.

The good news, however, is that you can apply to get verified again on Twitter now. And unlike the older stints years ago, this time around your profile also must be authentic, notable and active to be eligible and you also need to provide a bunch of information to qualify to submit your application. How you apply for verification depends on your profession and line of work.

Who can get verified on Twitter

User categories that are eligible to be verified include government and government officials, news organisations, journalists, companies, brands and organisations, entertainment organisations and individuals, sports teams, organisations and personalities, activists, organisers and influencers, scientists, academics, and religious leaders (these last few have been included for the first time ever).

How to check if you are eligible to get verified on Twitter

Twitter says “notable” accounts eligible for verification should be cited by an established organisation, body, or company. “Authentic” users must fulfill the basic criteria list that includes a profile photo, a valid bio along with other basic details. Also, you need to be “active” in the past six months to apply to be verified. Eligible users also need to have a confirmed email IS and phone number and also must not have violated any of Twitter’s community guidelines within the past six months.

How to apply for Twitter verification

If you fit the bill, you have to check your account and see if you see an account verification option appear under Settings. Once you see it you can click on it and begin the process.

- Select the appropriate category.

- Upload the government-issues ID (Twiter is not going to save this).

Then you can submit it. Once you have submitted, Twitter says that they take anything between one week to 30 days to respond. The response will arrive via email. If you are verified you will see a blue tick on your profile and in case you are not, you can reapply in six months’ time.

Many people have been complaining on Twitter today that they are not being able to submit their verification requests, so we suggest you give it a go later today or over the next few days.
